Now this is pure nonsense on my part, but the (ahem) reliable way for me to cause the crash has been to enter single-user mode, run my script (that loads the modules in question), and then exit to multi-user mode as quickly as possible. It doesn't always happen, but I am wondering if anything in the patch could possibly be fixing the crash? I am sure I am running the patched kernel.
