I did not suggest the second patch as a real fix.
I just wanted to see what (if any) effect it has
on Alan's tests.
(In the past, I've found that almost random changes
 can help identify a problem, like my suggestion to
 get rid of "nomsyncafterwrite".)

If the patch happens to help with Alan's test case,
then we need to figure out what needs to be done to
fix it.

W.r.t. ncl_writebp(), I'll take a look. This is all
very old code cribbed from the old NFS client and not
written by me.
