to follow up on this, the server rebooted for unrelated reasons and after a reboot the pool is now fine: the errors are gone and ‘zfs list -rt snapshot’ works as expected.  unless anyone has another idea, i’m going to put this down to a hardware issue and probably run a memory test (and another scrub).
