I never actively disabled journaling, so I imagined that it would be (by
default) enabled – and effective – after re-enabling soft updates. 

Re: comment #2 I was struck by the date of modification of /.sujournal

Metadata now viewed with Dolphin, it's clear to me that the file was created
(2021-06-17 12:12:49) but never modified. 

In retrospect, I guess that journaling was supposedly enabled 
– the '-j' in output from dumpfs -m / 
– but non-effective. Correct me, please, if I'm wrong.
