Fails in csh:

# pkg -oABI=FreeBSD:15:$(uname -p) -oOSVERSION=1501000 upgrade -r FreeBSD-base
Illegal variable name.

# echo $(uname -p)
Illegal variable name.

Works in sh.

the solution:

# pkg -oABI=FreeBSD:15:`uname -p` -oOSVERSION=1501000 upgrade -r FreeBSD-base
