            Bug ID: 287722
           Summary: Website: system requirements: memory/RAM: UFS and ZFS
           Product: Documentation
           Version: Latest
          Hardware: Any
                OS: Any
            Status: New
          Severity: Affects Only Me
          Priority: ---
         Component: Website
          Assignee: doc@FreeBSD.org
          Reporter: grahamperrin@gmail.com

Bug 287719 focuses on bsdinstall.

This report is for the website, not for the documentation portal.

<https://www.freebsd.org/where/#choose-image> will benefit from a concise
statement about memory hardware requirements.

To be seen _before_ a person downloads an image that might be large and
ultimately not suitable for their system. Suitability goes beyond installation
of the OS, it should include the ability to reinstall:

A) minimal, default, and full sets of base packages

B) each of the three base sets plus a set for a desktop environment.

For (B) at this time, I suggest:

    kde plasma6-sddm-kcm sddm xorg

Eventually, a Wayland-oriented set may be more appropriate
(<https://github.com/FreeBSDFoundation/proj-laptop/issues/25>,
<https://github.com/FreeBSDFoundation/proj-laptop/issues/28>).

Then and now
============

doc cc259e770aa2 and doc 124bd761978c (2016) estimated 2-4 GB for desktop
systems. Archived, 12.4-RELEASE:
<https://docs-archive.freebsd.org/doc/12.4-RELEASE/usr/local/share/doc/freebsd/en/books/handbook/handbook_en.pdf#%5B%7B%22num%22%3A258%2C%22gen%22%3A0%7D%2C%7B%22name%22%3A%22XYZ%22%7D%2C0%2C841.89%2Cnull%5D>

Now re:
<https://www.reddit.com/r/freebsd/comments/1lcm1ze/www/mybhzst/?context=1>,
with ZFS, it's _possible_ that 2 GB was a minimum with outdated version 1.21.3
of pkg. I should retest with 2.2.0 …
