The Handbook 16.3.2 Password Hashes suggests the following:

> The following command can be run to check which hash mechanism
> is currently being used:
> # grep user /etc/master.passwd
> The output should be similar to the following:
> :passwd_format=sha512:\

I believe the command should be:
# grep passwd_format /etc/login.conf
