In FreeBSD Handbook
7.4.4.2. Authenticate with Open Networks

Once the wireless network scan is done and the SSID of the wireless network is
selected, execute the following command:

# ifconfig wlan0 SSID

I think it should be:

# ifconfig wlan0 ssid SSID
