cleanup variable definitions

Applied changes of comment #30. 2 & 3 seemed nondestructive but I don't know
when they are needed or style changed and I presume 1 was carried through from
original 2005 port. I just ran across the port while reviewing pkg fallout;
after seeing a spike in my own failures I started trying to see if fixes were
known upstream or simple enough for me to solve. Did more than fix this one
since the port seemed simple enough but my ideas of what could be done didn't
match what I pulled off. I couldn't get it to switch to the NLS languages
though but that may be my own configuration issue. Otherwise I'm not a user of
the port though I did confirm I could open it; seems doubtful I'd be of value
as a maintainer but I could still try.
