There's an essential bit of information missing here: "with gcc as compiler".
Since we've now reached libpng 1.6.39, and `objdump -T
/usr/local/lib/libpng16.so.16.39.0` shows versioned symbols in a regular build,
e.g.

0000000000030890 g    DF .text  00000000000001d9  PNG16_0    
png_set_unknown_chunks

I'm going to close this one as "unable to reproduce". If the problem still
exists in your upgrade path, please provide more detailed instructions on how
to reproduce the problem.
