I haven't had the problem ever since FreeBSD 13.

I'm still using lightdm but have switched from the old character-mode console
(kern.vty=sc, BIOS boot) to EFI and kern.vty=vt. The result of this change was
not only that ACPI S3 suspend/resume finally started working but also allowed
switching back and forth between X11 and character VCs without video corruption
(I'm using the nvidia driver in case this makes any difference).

Either way, ck-list-sessions is correctly reporting the active/inactive state
of the X11 session at this point.
