From a cursory look at the stack, it seems the changes are either specific to Apple hardware or fixes for complete stalls with a priori no impact on the I/O speed, except possibly for the arbitration burst programming (https://reviews.freebsd.org/D59155).

Are NVME drives from all brand potentially concerned?  Which change (or changes) in the stack cause(s) the improvement you're observing on non-Apple hardware?
