reading this for a long time now there should be possible to obtain two old 160g disks and put the into mirror even for a hobby : ) as well as obtaining a proper psu with same next to nothing price. probably not the hub psu itself then there's possible intermittent contact in psu jack fbsd can't fix any of this few years ago i upgraded my disk testing procedures and built dir/flatfile/shell hdd inventory to track them (source i obtained it from, tests, dates, serials, comments, observations) my favorite verification procedure is: tests = dd-zero; smart-long; badblocks; zfs-f3; zfs-scrub; smart-long; dd-zero it should be self-explanatory, but badblocks and f3 are programs, fyi i can elaborate on this if needed this should verify hdd for any visible or hidden issues (io errors, corruptions) altho i had weird issues recently. in 13 i had weird zfs faults (checksum errors). in 14 they are gone. i assumed hw (hdd, power, this runs 5 disks from sff c2d, i can't hotplug hdd as it will drop some other hdd out from brownout - don't do this tho, hell knows what hdd will do) but now that they are gone, how so? i'm yet too lazy to add second psu to machine machines aren't much tested either, i only look if caps are bulging in psu and mobo
