For aught I understand, this is an orthogonal matter, because
the inability to find this thread in the archive via a search
engine is not Mark's fault, is it?

This thread is well archived:

   <https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-current/2026-January/009760.html>

but search engines may not have caught up to it yet. Posts
from 2025.11 are already findable, e.g:

   https://www.google.com/search?q="I+am+happy+to+ask+the+dumb+questions"+site%3Alists.freebsd.org%2Farchives%2Ffreebsd-current

There seems to be about two month's lag. If independent archive
search is required, a search enginie such as Namazzu
(http://www.namazu.org) should be installed on-premise.
