In some situations, that might be workable.  In some situations the root
file system is intentionally mounted read-only.  Finding a
"one-size-fits-all" solution here is likely to be elusive, at best.

I am toward the end of my daily update cycle for the day, so I may
be able to spend some time trying to identify what caused the recent
change in behavior.  Once that is done, perhaps some thought may
be directed at whether or not the effects of that change may be
reverted (without incurring other breakage).
