Not sure; I don't see that, and I just finished doing in-place source updates from main-n246951-38e7025a60b2 to main-n246995-c0f171736a70 on 3 machines without issue -- also using META_MODE, as you are. You might want to see if that .ERROR_META_FILE has any useful hints in it.
