(Personal notes, mostly):

Earlier versions of the utility didn't implement searching for the source
directory: the version of whereis available in macOS 26.2, for instance,
doesn't claim to support this capability and the implementation was
[supposedly] taken from FreeBSD 3.0, etc. The version in FreeBSD does claim to
support this though.
