I cannot speak on behalf of FreeBSD, it my personal opinion, but for me it
looks like noone expected, that Intel microcode patch has grown dramatically
and exceed not only 8mb of default slop, but it is larger 16Mb now. It was
20-30Kb only 10-15 year ago.
 This slop area is used, when memory was not allocated by kernel yet. Destroyed
memory belongs not to kernet, but to BIOS structures in RAM. I hope it is not
security breach.
