One more detail: during the clean install on the external SSD, I noticed that
two additional firmware modules are loaded separately:
`gpu-firmware-amd-kmod-carrizo` and `wifi-firmware-iwlwifi-kmod-7000`. 

During the freebsd-update upgrade path, the mismatch between the new 15.1
kernel and the old 15.0 firmware/microcode packages left in the system might
also be a major trigger for the kernel panic.
