[Bug 295463] upgrade to 15.0 p9: booting freezes with "EFI framebuffer information"
Date: Fri, 22 May 2026 00:23:26 UTC
https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=295463 --- Comment #1 from Robert William Vesterman <bob@vesterman.com> --- Update: I opened a thread on the FreeBSD Forums about this, and a user there (epower53) suggested trying to boot from an earlier boot environment using a zfs snapshot. I had known that freebsd-update makes a snapshot of the existing boot stuff, and I always assumed it would be useful for recovering stuff from, but I never before knew that you could actually, uh, *boot* from it! That is so great, and so much better than what I always have done in the past when something went wrong with an upgrade (i.e. using a live CD to try to recover, and sometimes giving up and just wiping the machine and starting anew). Anyway, I tried booting from the p8 snapshot, but the same problem happened. Later, tried booting from the p7 snapshot, which worked! So I guess the problem must have been introduced in p8, not p9? As for why I never noticed it while using p8... I am not sure, but I suspect that I must not have rebooted after upgrading from p7 to p8. I feel like I'm usually good about following the advisory and/or errata on that sort of thing, but looking at them again now, it seems there were two, one of which said to reboot and the other of which did not. I guess it's possible that I forgot to check both of them, or accidentally read one of them twice or something. All in all, on a personal level, I'm glad my machine is up and running again, and I'm very happy having learned about the bootability of boot environment snapshots. But I am leaving this bug as open, because the problem must still exist, may affect other people, and at the very least will stop me from upgrading FreeBSD on this machine until it is resolved. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.
