Bug ID: 295428
Summary: Installer: root password truncates to 32 characters
Product: Base System
Version: 16.0-CURRENT
Hardware: Any
OS: Any
Status: New
Severity: Affects Only Me
Priority: ---
Component: bin
Assignee: bugs@FreeBSD.org
Reporter: dteske@FreeBSD.org
After the OS is installed, you are asked to set a root password.
In 16.0-CURRENT, as you start typing the password, it fills up the field and
when the entire field is filled with asterisks, and you keep typing, it is
non-obvious that additional input beyond 32 characters is being ignored.
To the best of my knowledge, 14.4-STABLE, which uses old dialog, does not
suffer this problem.
I was quite astonished when I could not log into my machine after having
attempted to set a password for root that exceeded 32 chars.
I was doubly astonished when I was able to log in after typing only the first
32 characters of the password and pressing ENTER -- because the installer gave
zero indication that it was truncated (neither visually during entry nor in the
dialog prompt nor in the aftermath of having set a truncated password).
