I'd call that a one-line workaround, not a fix, although it should help people
experiencing the problem.

You mentioned about a 50% reproducibility before your workaround. So the
underlying issue is probably timing-related. Perhaps the allocator needs to
finish the previous request (from something else?) before getting hit with the
request from this driver?
