Whilst the pictured test machine (in VirtualBox) has not yet visibly panicked,
it did stop responding immediately after I keyed Return for htop at the command
prompt. More than twenty-two minutes later: still frozen hard – no response to
ACPI shutdown, and so on. 

Re: bug 287755, for the default kernel to be usable with VirtualBox you should
disable two services before multi-user mode: 

service vboxguest disable
service vboxservice disable
