I'm interested in this TERM-related issue in bsdinstall as well. A few years
ago I started a discussion on the FreeBSD arch mailing list about whether there
is still a real need to prompt users to choose a terminal type other than
xterm:

The discussion did not lead to a clear conclusion, nor did it identify a
concrete use case for keeping the TERM selection prompt.

Do you have a specific use case where `ansi` would be preferred over `xterm`?
I'd be interested to learn more about it.
