Marcel Moolenaar seems to have already devoted quite a bit of time and effort
to this problem back in 2015. And as you pointed out, hartzell stated as early
as August 30, 2015 (at the end of bug #202730, comment #14):

"it doesn't seem worth sinking a lifetime into".

I couldn’t agree more!

My initial goal was to prevent this Mac Pro from going straight to the waste
disposal center. Done! Today, it runs perfectly on an actively maintained
open-source operating system. Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter to me
whether it runs a GNU/Linux distro or FreeBSD. However, I have no idea how much
time it has left before it breaks down for good. I’ve already consumed a bit of
time for this venerable 18-year-old machine. It doesn’t seem reasonable to me
to spend more.

However, if I am ever informed via this bug report that other people wish to
run this Mac Pro model with FreeBSD, I would be happy to help... provided mine
is still working! :)
