Updating today:

After build world/kernel as regular user: 
(etcupdate -p reported nothing)
> root@fafnir.home.arpa.:/usr/src:4:# etcupdate
> Build sentinel not found in object directory, did you forget to make
> buildworld or pass -b to etcupdate?
> Failed to build new tree.

> root@fafnir.home.arpa.:/usr/src:6:# make -V.OBJDIR
> /usr/src

/usr/src is read-only if that means anything.
