I suspect commit 0b2f891f3bda8cffdbcfbc9efaa819a9b3a01b8f is more likely
related to a boot issue on the host than the one you bisected to, though the
two are needed together.  Can you try if just reverting that commit fixes it? 
I also wonder if you would be better off not using pptdevs in loader.conf and
instead using devctl to reassign the device to the ppt(4) driver post-boot.
