To be clear, I never said anything about removing the -f flag from the wrapper.

It sounds like you're saying if the user makes the mistake of using xzgrep on a
bzip2 file, they should not receive an error. (And they probably won't receive
any output either!)

So if the user runs xzgrep on a bzip2 file, bzip2 is used to decompress the
file? Why even have wrappers installed for bzegrep, bzfgrep, bzgrep, lzegrep,
lzfgrep, lzgrep, xzegrep, xzfgrep, xzgrep, zegrep, zfgrep, zgrep, zstdegrep,
zstdfgrep, or zstdgrep?

That sounds like a change that is way beyond the scope of this PR.
