Thank you for the detailed response Ingo. That commit was just from the GitHub
mirror as it provides an easy way to search without cloning. I realise now I
did not properly read the bug report before replying; my response was because I
had been discussing it, without being shown the bug report details, on IRC
(just "core dumped", nothing about assertions, which clearly rules out the
commit I mentioned, not to mention the submitter here had already identified
the fix) and had independently reached my own, flawed conclusion that I posted
in response to your message and the bug being closed.

That fix does indeed seem minimal and low risk, but it's not up to me to
decide, so I will defer to others whether this is worth an EN.
