I did try verbose boot, it hung at the same spot and there were no additional
details about the immediately preceding PCI devices so I didn't think it had
any additional value.

I will attempt the debugger first thing in the morning.  I also plan to try
booting into a 14.3-RELEASE installer on a USB stick just to see if
14.3-RELEASE continues.
