No, my ask is simple: if you perceive that there is a problem with FreeBSD or
OpenZFS/FreeBSD, please share that with us.
Otherwise, this report is just a bunch of facts.
If you do not perceive any such problem, then why open a problem report.
There are mailing lists, web forums, discord, etc where you can discuss issues
which are not FreeBSD bugs.

As to what might have happened: e.g., the disk became temporarily (but long
enough) unavailable.  Of course, the VM wouldn't be able to log anything
because where the log would go?

You can check any hypervisor logs, any VM console output, any remote logs from
the VM.
If you don't have those, then we don't have anything to work with.
But this might be a good time to setup those things so that some clues are
available should the problem happen again.
