Thanks, Justin, for the explanation. This was the first I've heard about the
different device paths based on the TPM version.

I dug into my Z440 BIOS and I found the page that reported TPM details. Sure
enough, it is version 1.2. My mistake for assuming 2.0 since the machine had
arrived with the latest BIOS already installed. I didn't think that the TPM
upgrade would be a separate utility.

Researching how to upgrade the Z440 TPM took a while. The details on HP's
support page was old. I finally found a HP forum chat where direct download
links to the 2018 TPM Configurator tool was provided.

I first had to disconnect my existing SSDs, then connect a temporary drive and
install Windows 10. Even though the tool found the TPM and prepared the
upgrade, it did not succeed. Further research revealed that even though the
instructions recommended upgrading to the latest BIOS first, that BIOS version
contains a bug that prevents the TPM upgrade from succeeding.

Another forum thread included instructions on how to downgrade the BIOS to an
older version, upgrade the TPM, and then upgrade the BIOS back up. These steps
are important, since a jumper needs to be temporarily changed to allow the BIOS
downgrade.

For now I do not feel comfortable trying this on my production machine in its
current configuration. Some day I might try. Hopefully the above information
helps others with HP Z440 workstations.
