Failure was something like "/bin/sh: cannot create
/usr/obj/usr/src/amd64.amd64/release/dist/base/var/db/etcupdate/etcupdate-xfseTtP/var/cache/distfiles/METALOG:
No such file or directory"

DISTDIR indeed has a different meaning in base and ports (and both uses have a
long history).
