Can you double check whether commit 41adc5f29ba6955e09f46e4d2c25da6fcd263ba2
changed this?  Staring at the commit, it's hard to see how.

It sounds a bit like the real solution is for ports-specific variables to be
set in /etc/ports.conf or so, akin to /etc/src.conf.
