We discussed this PR at the security team meeting yesterday.

Since we don't have anything else to publish, and this does not look
particularly urgent, we will let this stew on the stable/* branches for now.  I
will stage the erratum and the patch in the secteam repo to publish with our
next batch.  We will review our queue again in a fortnight.
