^Triage: Our vi(1) is nvi2, which was designed to be bug for bug compatible
with original AT&T vi(1) with just a few extra features. Bugs or feature
requests should be reported upstream, but since this works as intended, I'm
going to close this.

P.S. I've also filed bugs on vi(1) that is actually working as intended :)
