I had the same thing happen to me yesterday, after I had upgraded my system to
FreeBSD 14.1-RELEASE.  "newaliases" (aka. "sendmail -bi") failed to parse my
aliases that contained a pipe (and parameters), and "sendmail" failed to run in
the background as a server.

But upgrading my "sendmail" to the latest version fixed the problem.
