I built a source unmodified base bad90cb4f686 with my usual src.conf for th= at machine, and on boot, date(1) crashes when trying to print the date for the login prompt, /var/log is not mounted or read-only (so no /var/log/messages= or anything) and a bunch of base system stuff doesn't run (or tries to run but exits with "no error"). No dumps or traces are created or available.
