While we are on interactive improvements path - I would also implement the !$
thing for /bin/sh shell.

    % ls -F /usr
    bin/     include/  libdata/  obj/    share/
    ccache/  lib/      libexec/  ports/  src/
    home/    lib32/    local/    sbin/   tests/

    % ls !$
    ls: !$: No such file or directory

The !$ thing is the last argument of the previous command.

Example of working !$ from zsh(1) or bash(1) shell.

    % ls !$  
    ls /usr
    bin     include  libdata  obj    share
    ccache  lib      libexec  ports  src
    home    lib32    local    sbin   tests

Speeds up command execution in many aspects.
