Just another data point:
Infamous dougb@ test which lead to revert of first gnu to bsdgrep conversion
attempt in 2010:

results:
GNU grep
Elapsed time: 13 seconds

BSD grep
Elapsed time: 17 seconds

As you see, bsdgrep is still 30% slower than gnurep in this most common and
trivial case.
