bectl should not be trying to mandate what's right or wrong here. As long as
the kernel and userland rc zfs* scripts are working with this setup otherwise
out of the box, I struggle to see why we shouldn't try to accommodate.

I'm otherwise not sure exactly what you mean. The mountpoint is otherwise
ignored for roots, what useful values that are neither none or / have you seen?
