I have now tested on the following.

12.2 boot only iso
13.0 bootonly iso
13.1 beta 1 boot only iso
14.0 current boot only iso dated 10 march
12 stable boot only iso dated 10 march

13.1 and 14.0 are good, no kernel panic and can get to the installer menu.

13.0 and all 12.x images do panic before the boot menu is loaded, so even
12-STABLE has the problem.

So it looks like someone has already resolved this issue in the latest FreeBSD
code, I dont know if it can be backported to 12, it would be nice if it can,
but this is good news regardless.

For curiosity sake I am still going to test this on bare metal and will be
today, depending on the result of that I will report this to QEMU developers.
