vt newcons ignores the setting in /boot/loader.conf:
hw.vga.textmode="YES"

It switches to graphics mode anyway.
This might also be responsible for introduction of other problems, like
attempting console access from X with ctl-alt-Fn and getting garbage screen as
result.
