Thank you for pointing this out: I like and share your attitude to
really know the cause and fix the issue, but have lots of linking
errors during builds with this:

ld: error: relocation R_X86_64_32 cannot be used against local symbol; recompile with -fPIC

Seems like it may be other important variables from MAKE_ENV too...
