Not really.  People want to be able to mix-n-match.  Bringing in 
PostgreSQL and/or MySQL
brings in heavyweight dependencies.  LDAP did not do that.

If/when subpackages works with USES that might work.

I've had this question asked before, and have been told off.

If the project wants me to revert this, I can.
