Then sources were grabbed with git clone https://git.freebsd.org/src.git And then, a make kernel reboot make buildkernel kernel etcupdate -p make installworld etcupdate -B make check-old yes | make delete-old yes | make delete-old-libs reboot cycle was completed and a shiny new 16.0-CURRENT (GENERIC-NODEBUG) #0 main-n280154-fd9e09cb2ab0 resulted. Upon becoming root, running pkg bootstrap -f resulted in the following output: root@fbsd16-vm:~ # pkg bootstrap -f The package management tool is not yet installed on your system. Do you want to fetch and install it now? Is this expected? I don't want to use pkgbase at all. I'd like the pkg facility for ports, though. Usually this is in circumstances where I'd just want the vm (or baremetal) system up and running and to configure a couple of tools. Later on, I'd expect to have to hook it up to a local-net poudriere instance. --
