In some situations, that might be workable. In some situations the root file system is intentionally mounted read-only. Finding a "one-size-fits-all" solution here is likely to be elusive, at best. I am toward the end of my daily update cycle for the day, so I may be able to spend some time trying to identify what caused the recent change in behavior.
