To elaborate: MonoDevelop is many things:
 - Xamarin Studio on Windows [1][2][3]
 - Visual Studio for Mac, um, on Mac [3]
 - MonoDevelop elsewhere

I track the release notes [4] for VS for Mac to determine the release numbers.
I then use the release date to figure out which branch [5] and commit is likely
the release.

Regards

[1] I believe Xamarin Studio, as a stand alone app, is now "compile from
source" only on Windows.
[2] Xamarin Studio should not be confused with the various Xamarin branded
plug-ins for Visual Studio
[3] Extra propriety plugins are included in the release
[4] https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/visualstudio/releasenotes/vs2017-mac-relnotes
[5] The file version.config on https://github.com/mono/monodevelop indicates the
approximate version (it misses the 4th release number).
