One question on this that's been in my head for a while:  Should
we ever move man pages from .gz to .xz, say, how will we go about
this in ports?

To me that is the main design disadvantage of moving from MAN= to 
pkg-plist.  I am sure this has been considered and I just have not
seen the answer.
