But...
After running lowriter or lacalc, if exits immediately with this error:

terminate called after throwing an instance of
'com::sun::star::ucb::InteractiveAugmentedIOException'

I will rebuild without java, and see if this partially to blame. Whenever
anything goes wrong, it is easy to just blame java, isn't? ;)

Here are my options:
